LGBTQ YOUTH ACCOUNT FOR
|
Outlast Youth exists to reduce and prevent LGBTQ youth homelessness in Dallas and surrounding counties.
According to service providers, an estimated 20-40% of youth experiencing homelessness identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer, LGBTQ, while only 7-10% of the general youth population identifies as such (Ray, N., 2006). As a result, under the direction of the City of Dallas' LGBT Task Force, chaired by DMPT Adam Medrano, local organizations joined efforts to reduce and prevent LGBTQ youth homelessness in Dallas and surrounding communities
OUR HOW
Any good cause is just a cause without the work. We aim to manifest our mission and vision by doing the following
COLLABORATION
We collaborate with agencies from various sectors to build cross-sector bridges, working to heal the wounds of past hurts caused by the systemic roots of this issue. Through this initiative, we especially work with communities of faith to address the systemic cause of LGBTQ youth homelessness: familial rejection. |
ADVOCACY
We are actively working with partner organizations and elected officials to speak up for our most vulnerable. We aim to address the systemic causes of LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness. Additionally, we host workshops, talks and events to educate folks on the issue in their very backyard. |
INTERAGENCY
We have partnered with local homeless service provider agencies, educating staff on best serving LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness. In addition to terminology and basic cultural competency, we work through overcoming our implicit biases. |
